Shotts News Little bit of Shotts to go on display in German Toy Museum Dec 3 2008
by Charlie Rowney, Wishaw Press
An important part of the history of Shotts is being preserved at a unique museum in Germany. The Timpo Toys factory in Torbothie Road was a major local employer and produced
millions of models, including soldiers, cowboys and farmyard animals until it closed in 1980. Now, avid Timpo Toys collector Alfred Plath is opening a museum dedicated to the factory in his home town of Alpen in
western Germany. Timpo Toys employed around 1000 people after opening in 1964 and was famous for exporting models and the popular Etch-a-Sketch toy throughout the world. Mr Plath, who has written a book and made
short films about the German manufacturer and its toys, including footage of the Shotts factory, contacted North Lanarkshire Council to ask if they could send the original Torbothie Road street sign for inclusion in
the museum, set to open next year. Councillor Jim Robertson explained:. The council was happy to help Mr Plath and we have arranged to send the sign to Germany to take pride of place in the museum. Timpo Toys
factory was a major employer in Shotts and many people from the town worked there at some time and will have fond memories of the place. It was a blow for the town when it closed so it was great to hear that,
through Mr Plaths efforts, a little bit of our local history will be on display for future generations to see.For more news on the museum and the history of Timpo Toys, log on to Mr Plaths website at
www.timpo-artist.de, which has been translated into English.
